Rev. Maurice Anthony Bates has faithfully served as the Senior Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Pittsburg, California for over 28 years. Under his pastoral care, the church has experienced both numerical and spiritual growth. This growth has been the result of the various ministries that have been developed under his leadership i.e. Spiritual Boot Camp, Monday Night Biblical Studies, Sunday Church School, Discipleship and Evangelism Training, Women’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Young Men of Valor, Young Women of Virtue, Children / Youth Ministry, Young Adults’ Ministry and Seasoned Saints. Mount Zion’s Outreach has extended out as far away as Russia.

Pastor Bates has been preaching since the age of 14 years old. His spiritual growth and development can be attributed to his grandparents; the late Deacon Percy Bates and Dorothy Bates along with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Lester L. Cannon Sr. of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. His formal training has come through his under graduate work at the California Baptist University Riverside in Riverside, California. He has an earned Masters of Theological degree from Faith Seminary in Tacoma Washington and he been the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree from the Next Dimension Bible College and Seminary in Ontario, Canada and is working on a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Faith Seminary.

Pastor Bates is very active in the Christian community. He serves Director of the National Evangelism Training Network. He has also served as the 1st Vice Moderator for First Northern/Central Baptist Association and the past president of I.M.A.P. - International Ministerial Alliance of East Contra Costa.

His facilitation skills and practical Biblical approach to God’s Word, have made him a sought-after lecturer for Stewardship Training and He is presently a Core Facilitator at the W.H.W. Ministries, Inc. conference on Expository preaching and teaching. His preaching and teaching style have opened many doors for him to serve the Body of Christ. This commissioned and committed servant of the Lord is driven and directed by the Word of God. He has a genuine heart for the lost and a deep concern for the spiritual growth of those whom he has been given an opportunity to minister to through his teachings.

Pastor Bates is a native of California and grew up in Oakland, CA. He is known for taking “Pastoral therapy” through watching his home team, “The Oakland Raiders.” He is the husband of Mrs. Mavis Evette Bates and together they are the proud parents of two beautiful children: Morgan Alexis Bates and Marc Anthony Van Bates.
